‘Logistics in the Military Environment’

Jointly Organised by The School of Business IT and Logistics and the Global Supply Chain and Logistics Priority Area.

Peter Haddad

“You will not find it difficult to prove that battles, campaigns and even wars have been won or lost primarily because of logistics” – a quote from General Dwight D Eisenhower, Supreme Allied Commander – Europe, World War 11

Having an effective and efficient logistics system is critical to the success of military operations. Particular challenges arise in designing logistics systems and solutions to meet the needs of military forces operating in the land, sea and air environments. A further challenge is, where appropriate, is to apply best commercial logistics practice to military logistics solution. The Australian Defence Force has had mixed success in meeting these challenges.

The presentation will discuss the evolution of Australian military logistics with a focus on the factors that have impacted on the design of the logistics solution currently used by the Australian Defence Force. It will discuss the challenges of maintaining a balance between applying contemporary best commercial practice and ensuring the existence of a robust system capable of supporting military forces engaged in wars in locations distant from Australia.

Date:        16th August 2017
Time:        11am – 12pm
Venue:      Swanston Academic Building
                   Building 80, Level 9, Room 11

Peter Haddad is a retired military officer and an Adjunct Professor at RMIT. In his military career, he reached the rank of Major General and was responsible for running the defence logistic system, including support to military operations in Timor, the Solomon Islands, Iraq and Afghanistan. During his military career, he was responsible for a program that reshaped the defence logistics base system through outsourcing, infrastructure rationalisation and the introduction of improved information management systems. In his post military career, he has worked as a consultant in the defence industry sector with clients in Government, major defence industry companies and industry associations.
